Gosh! Easy one.
It's that US catapult floatplane (here in it's wheeled version of course...) which had a batch sold to the UK which were'nt regarded as sufficently robust and the Ranger engine was not liked either. The name? It's on the tip of my tongue... Honest... Um...

I'm going to have to get a lot sneakier to get past PPRuNers!
You're almost there, James and you're right about it having a Ranger engine.
The Fleet Air Arm had it for a while and didn't like it. They first received it in March 1943 but it never went into operational service. About 10 years later the name they gave this type was also applied to another FAA type which was equally unsuccessful. Now that's really given it away!

Yup, that's it :ok: - the Curtiss SO3C-1 "Seagull", known as the Seamew in the FAA, although I believe the Americans also adopted the Seamew name later on in the war.
More usually seen with one large central float and two wing-mounted stabilising floats.
Now what can I find next.........

Post war, I believe there was a Short Seamew which I think got as far as pre production before getting the chop.....sort of a skinny Gannet....or am I thinking of something completely different?
