Is there any free software to play DVD's from any region on a laptop? I have just bought a new laptop and although the company says you can change the region 5 times, it will lock after that. I would like a software program that allows me to change between zones all the time without having to mess around with the setting of the hardware itself..

Thanks.

Try DVD Genie (http://www.inmatrix.com/files/dvdgenie_download.shtml)

You might be able to flash the DVD drives firmware with a version that doesn't have region locking enable. See www.rpc1.org.

Make sure you spend the time to thoroughly read about your drive. I've done two laptop drives of my own + one or two drives belongin to others courtesy of information & firmware from this site.

You'll still have to defeat any operating system & DVD playing software region coding limitations. I use 'DVD region killer'. Works a treat.

www.dvdidle.com Dvd Region free seems to work the best on all computers. DVD Genie didnt work for me. If your like me, and skills just manage to install software I might not be in such a hurry to flash firmware etc, unless you were 100% certain what you were doing. I dont mean this as an insult to other here but I think the fact that its very straight forward for them, but not for others, is over looked sometimes.

Is DVDidle similiar to Alcohol 52% in that it saves copies an image of the disc to harddrive? Are movies any slower/jerkier when watched saved on a HDD?

There are two products available on dvdidle.com. The one you want is DVD Region free. When it is running it unlocks the drive and you can use it with ANY of your Media Players. It is not a Player itself but unlocking software. It works very well and plays the Movies without shudder or being jerky. (They should be paying me for this!)
