Birmingham International Airport (BIA) handled 1,017,452 passengers
in August, an increase of 12.9% over the same month last year and the
first time the airport has broken through the million passenger mark
in a single month. The milestone was reached on Sunday 31st August.

Scheduled traffic overall was up by 21.1%, with EU traffic rising by
30.5%. Passengers using international services grew by 25.8% and the
number of travellers using domestic flights rose by 7.7%. An increase
in passengers was also seen on services to the Indian sub-continent,
up by 28.4%.

The growth in scheduled traffic has been consistent throughout the
summer season with the increased availability of low fares and new
destinations from Birmingham. This pattern is set to continue during
the coming winter with the introduction of eight new scheduled routes
to Almeria, Cologne, Gerona, Helsinki, Inverness, Oslo, Salzburg and
Tenerife.

Commenting on the record figures, Managing Director, Richard Heard
said, "I am delighted to see the continuing recovery of the aviation
business. At Birmingham, we have seen strong growth in all sectors,
both in terms of new services and increasing load factors on existing
routes. With eight new routes planned for the winter season we look
forward to serving an increasing proportion of the region's travel
needs".

Charter traffic also grew during August by 3.8% with more passengers
travelling to the Greece (+22.2%), Tunisia (+21.9%), Cyprus (+12.4%),
Italy (+9.4%), Turkey (+8.9%) and the Canaries (+3.4%) than a year
ago.

Scheduled traffic accounted for 55.9% of the total August figure
while charter passengers made up the remaining 44.1%. Although the
number of people using Birmingham Airport is currently at record
level, the number of actual Air Transport Movements reduced by 0.5%
compared to August last year.
