Slightly confused about doing an IR at Aerofan. (Madrid)

Aerofan is JAR Approved for ratings, licences etc and approved by the Spanish CAA

However, Aerofan is not on the list of UK CAA approved FTOs.

Although we are one big happy JAR family, does this still mean that an IR at Aerofan would be worthless in the eyes of the UK CAA ?

No, it means it's listed as a FTO approved by the local (i.e., Spanish CAA - called the DGAC).

Aerofan does not appear on the UK CAA website because its approval was not granted by the UK CAA but by the Spanish DGAC. Approval is normally granted by the national authority of the JAA member state in which the FTO or TRTO operates and, assuming that the approval was granted in accordance with JAR-FCL, then has to be accepted 'without formality' by all other member states.

There are a few exceptions to this rule, such as BAe who moved to Jerez before Spain had implemented JAR-FCL 1. The Spanish DGAC therefore requested the UK CAA to continue to administer the approval.

If you are considering training for the issue of a licence then that licence will be issued by the Spanish DGAC, but will still be recognised by other member states (with one or two notable exceptions) as a valid JAA licence. Bear in mind, however, that you will have to pass the ground exams set in 'European' english. You cannot train in Spain (other than at BAe) for a UK issued licence.

If you are considering training for a rating to be added to a UK issued JAA licence, there should be no problem so long as Aerofan's approval was granted strictly in accordance with JAR-FCL 1. It might be worth checking with the UK CAA in case they require the application to be submitted using their own paperwork rather than using DGAC forms
