Mishandled

I have just completed a clean installation of Windows XP professional (in German but thats a different story), and I currently have two problems that I would greatly appreciate any help with.
I have installed my ADSL modem sucessfully, (so far this is the only thing I have done after installing XP), however when I connect to the internet, after about one minute or two, I get a dialogue box that pops up to the effetct that the computer has malfunctioned and will shut down in 60 seconds. In the box there is a reference to RPC and Win32 Generic Host, (can't translate much further, cos my german tech speak isnt too good:sad: ). I think that a patch or update is required from microsoft, but the only problem is that I cant get online long enough to do it, I am in an internet cafe at the moment) Any ideas as to how I might get the updates back to my pc?
Secondly, when I installed XP It asked me which keyboard I had, but only gave me the option of a german one. I have a Swiss-german one. The resultant is that I can't enter the "@<hidden>" symbol. Can anyone tell me how to get XP to tecognise my Swiss keyboard?
Thank you in advance for your help, and here is some free advice:
Installing a foreign language version of Windows XP is inadvisable, when your knowledge of that language only extends as far as Beer, Food, and finding restaurants. (I thought to myself as I bought it "How difficult can it be?" answer: Very :O
