MAN-BKK market
Widely reported elsewhere so I might as well reproduce it here. Obviously yield is one issue, but ignoring connecting traffic, the stimulus of a direct flight and indirect traffic from the wider catchment, this is as good a basis for a direct flight as any.
Phuket is obviously served but I don't know how strong the market for this is.

MAN-BKK is the largest unserved Europe-Thailand route. 135,000 passengers last year, roughly 184 passengers per day each way.
The origin point is fairly evenly split between BKK and MAN. Also, 42,000 travelled BHX-BKK last year.

There is every chance Riyadh is seasonal, however, Jeddah also used to have periods where it wasn't loaded for a full season despite being year round, so, there is a chance Tiyadh could be year round.
Saudia were rumoured to be going daily year round so this could be the way of doing it.

If TG ever actually land at MAN then great, until then same old dreamworld. There have been rumours of a direct BKK-MAN service for the past 34 years that I am aware of, then they were supposed to be flying twice a week via ARN with a DC10. About 8 years ago it was actually stated in a press release on the the TG website they were planning a service but again nothing happened, they went to Oslo first and then announced DUS last year

Given the volume of O&D traffic alone between MAN and BKK the route looks ripe for Thomas Cook on say a 3x weekly frequency. The potential as another springboard to Australasia wouldn't work as well as TG, of course.

FR operating MAN-LUX is absolutely pointless, if they start operating Flybe will stop. And I don't think that a 738 is a suitable aircraft for such route.
Flybe are best to keep this route but we will probably see another MAD where 3 carriers will operate it for a couple of months before cancelling it.

I flew LUX-MAN a few months back. 9 pax. That would look good split between Flybe & a Ryanair 738.
Surely there must be better opportunities for RYR (Seville, Bucharest, Bordeaux,Tallinn for example)

Meanwhile, I agree that there are markets (especially in Eastern Europe) which I would far rather see Ryanair launch from MAN.
Vilinius or Kaunas, SE France, somewhere in the Balkans? Not sure there's much to go at that's an easy (as in the adjective!) win.

OK. Think MAN done quite well to wrestle some of the Polish market from LPL - once exclusive from there. Romania is the same with 4 cities on the LPL network (Blue Air x3 & Wizz x1). They also have exclusive Katowice, Lublin, Poznan and Szczecin.
Think it's to do with worker movements and the travel 'habit' that Polish/Romanian services fly from LPL.
Think Bucharest should be on MAN's network and would welcome the return of TAROM!

Based on the CAA statistics for December, the total moving annual passenger count was 25,542,985

TAROM didn't operate to Bucharest back in the day, it was an IL18 service (RO761 / 762 if I remember rightly) to Constanta on a Saturday morning. Regrettably, it's no longer the tourist resort that it once was. Bucharest will be a rather different market!
Bob Sopel Travel was one of two tour operators specialising in services to Eastern Europe, with Rochdale Travel being the other one. There were big Ukrainian expat community in Rochdale, Mansfield and Bradford with origins from Lv'iv and to a lesser level, Ivanofrankovsk. There were also some quite large flows from the same areas - related to post-WW2 immigration and textile or coal mining industries - from Latvia. As Tears of the Moon says, it's a much less prominent link in the following generations which has a consequent demand on air travel.

I think people are talking about when it was a 1-11 I think twice weekly during the week

There was a scheduled Tarom service to Bucharest from March 1994 and operated by BAC-111s. But it was very short lived - not more than a season or two IIRC
Prior to that there were long standing Tarom tourist charters to Constanta on weekends, operated by a variety of B707s, IL62s, IL18s and TU-154s. You never really knew what was going to turn up on the day....

I've not done the stats but it appears that MAN was the fastest growing airport in the UK in December and is close to LGW in terms of total growth in 2016.
Current trends would suggest that MAN will grow more than anywhere else in 2017 although in reality, a lot can and will change.
