Stobart Subsidiary Propius Enters Aircraft Sale And Leaseback Contract - Finance News - London South East


"We are pleased to have refinanced these aircraft with GOAL. Aviation is a core part of the group's strategy to grow the overall business. This transaction will provide additional flexibility to invest and grow both our Dublin-based regional airline, Stobart Air, and London Southend Airport where we are focused on our target of delivering 2.5 million passengers annually by 2018," said Warwick Brady, deputy group chief executive officer of Stobart.

I know sale and leaseback is a legitimate business practice, one can only hope most of the cash is for new investment in LSA and not to provide cash for existing operations in the hope/expectation of growth.

While I sometimes struggle to see the wisdom of leaseback arrangements, it isn't just a case of comparing the sale value achieved with the lease cost over 10 years. Don't forget that depreciation of the asset now falls upon the lessor and the terms of the lease may mean that other ownership costs pass to them rather than the lessee. You would need to see the details of the lease before making a judgement I would suggest.

I may have misread, but I passed an advert at Stratford today that seemed to be advertising Nice. Unless it actually said 'nice'. But the background looked like Nice. What is for sure is that I didn't see it a couple of days ago and it had the new airport logo on it.

It's being reported by Oliver Clark (@oliver_clark) (He is a reporter at Flight Global) on twitter that Stobart have confirmed flights will begin from Carlisle to Southend, Belfast City and Dublin later this year.

Haven't seen anything on this elsewhere - all the comments previously have been that an Atr-42 would be used so can't see how Cityjet would be involved.

It was recent comment heard from Cityjet crew members where they acknowledged the original discussions did collapse but they have apparently re-engaged again to try resurrect and continue discussions. I have no idea if this is actually the factual position but as I've explained, this information is current and came from company flight crew personnel.

Two comments on that:

1. a/c type isn't optimum
2. EIDW load factors are strong
3. critical success factor will require optimum schedule service

Sat first dep to EIDW no later than 09:00. Sun arr back into EGMC from EIDW 20:00. That sort of schedule will attract pax. Some will stay overnight at Holiday Inn on the Friday to catch an early Sat a.m. I think they need to very carefully reflect upon what regular scheduled services are on that route from EGSS and EGKK for Sat & Sun services. Pax in the Thurrock, Basildon, Southend catchment area will use EGMC as a EIDW choice over EGSS or EGKK 'if' the schedule is an attractive alternative to driving the M25 Dartford Crossing to Gatwick or the M25/11 to Stansted.

Flight Experience SEN-AMS-SEN

Returned last night from my trip around the Netherlands and thought I would share my experience.

OUTBOUND: I had an early morning flight last Saturday at 7:10, took me 6 minutes to drive to the airport, checked-in online so went straight to security. Fairly quick through security (10 mins approx, both lanes open, and a new one currently being installed - staff very friendly). Airside, plenty of seating, shops available are basic (but all you really need). The old Tax & Duty Free is now being converted into another shop (opening soon) after the larger World Duty Free Store opened. No long walk to the gate as you are pretty much sat there already. Flight departed on time and was full.

RETURN: Flight arrived 5 minutes early (35 mins in the air!). Very quick to disembark and a short walk to passport control. 6 desks in total, 4 were open (1 open for non-eu passport holders, 3 for EU passports). Despite two desks being closed, we were still processed very quickly (approx 10 mins). Border Force staff very friendly (which is sometimes a rarity). This flight was also full and had landed just after the RNS evening arrival, so there were around 200 people to process. Short walk through baggage (I only had hand luggage) and out the terminal to the car park in 5 mins.

So overall from plane landing to getting home took less than 30 mins. I've seen people complain about the quality of service at SEN before, but for me there were no issues at all and it was simply a fantastic passenger experience and I would highly recommend it. It is also quite clear that SEN can handle more flights as they seem to process people (outbound and inbound) very quickly even without all the security lanes/border posts open. I look forward to flying from there again soon!

If only they could close a deal with Cityjet it will mean easyJet and Cityjet bases marking a fantastic achievement to attract carriers to establish bases. Momentum will build from having stronger business case evidence in reality when opening discussions with additional carriers.

Thanks for sharing - what is clearly a fantastic customer experience.

I'm a frequent flyer and use SEN too, my experiences are identical. The place just works as it should - no drama, no stress, you park the car, walk a few paces into the terminal, fast security, next thing you know, you're sitting at your gate all done in a matter of a couple of minutes.

It's almost biz exec jet private charter speed, unheard of really for a regional airport.

I feel SEN are on the cusp of something great, it's frustratingly slow pace of progress, but it's such an incredible economic asset to Essex and dare I say it, London too - as our remaining London and surrounding airports are choked to capacity.

SEN will have an increasingly important economic business case to Essex employment. SEN and London Gateway are strategic assets.
