Wow, six Luton based aircraft for Monarch? I thought the fifth plane, yet to arrive, will ply the new routes like Antalya and Naples. Does a sixth aircraft mean more new routes or increased frequencies?

I did it based on the schedule of the first week in June... There was still a small amount of slack in the schedule for a few hours on some days and space overnight for some additional rotations on peak summer flights.
I'd be surprised if a 6th aircraft was going to turn up now.

I agree with you Giles, have just done a quick check for Monarch flights in July and August and as far as I can see there are no W patterns at all. In fact on Sundays a A320 does a Luton-Gib-Birmingham-Gib-Luton and does not arrive back until late evening; but it would be nice to see a sixth aircraft but not holding my breath.

I thought that 5 aircraft was the Monarch fleet this summer, 2 x A321 and 3x A330 so was surprised by Alloy's previous post about 6 planes. Surely, the summer schedules are sorted?

It would not surprise me to see monarch add further short season sectors ( they have done this with CFU, AGP and PMI in the past) for say July though early September.
Whether this will mean additional aircraft? In the past they have been operated at night by the usual based aircraft.

There is no point at looking at Monarch schedules until late June at any base, last A321 does not enter service till late June, even though the extra A321 becomes the spare a/c based in BHX.

Oh and yes Monarch have had more than six based but you need to go back a long way - probably 4* Britannia and 3* 720B in 1972. And probably a larger number of 720B/707/One Eleven in the mid seventies before the drift, principally to Gatwick set in.

MORE WIZZAIR FLIGHTS TO GDANSK
The number of weekly flights to Gdansk is to go up from 14 to 18 weekly from Luton. A fifth aircraft is to be based at Gdansk with the start-up of services from Lviv temporarily suspended - not surprising considering the unrest in the Ukraine.

(Reuters) - Britain is expected to give final approval to expand Luton Airport in the next few weeks for a capacity boost of up to 18 million passengers, the chairman of the world's biggest airport operator Aena said on Thursday.
Expansion of the airport and its runway would require investment of 98 million pounds ($164.6 million), Aena's Jose Manuel Vargas told Spain's Chamber of Commerce at an awards ceremony in London, according to a statement from the company in Madrid.
"The contracting of the work will begin as soon as the necessary permits are acquired, after a long and complex process that we hope will come to a positive conclusion in the coming weeks," he said.
Spain-based Aena, whose airports division is a potential privatisation candidate, bought Luton airport last year. It has stakes in more than 20 airports beyond Spain and 46 at home.
Luton is London's fourth-biggest airport with 9.7 million passengers in 2013 and capacity for up to 12 million. Vargas said it hopes to boost that number to 18 million.
The investment would have a positive economic impact by creating jobs, Vargas said, adding that shopping services at the airport would also be expanded, along with transport links to the City of London financial district.
One of the biggest beneficiaries of the expansion would be budget airline Easyjet (EZJ.L), which recently secured more space at Luton.
Permission for expansion of London's biggest airports Heathrow and Gatwick is a political hot potato because adding capacity in those densely populated areas around the British capital is unpopular with voters.

The expansion plans have been approved by Luton Council but other councils have complained to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government that as the airport is ultimately owned by Luton council they have given themselves planning permission.
After the complaints the Secretary of State got involved and is now looking at whether the council has acted correctly. If he upholds the complaints then the planning application that the council approved would go to a public inquiry which could hold things up for years.
It is interesting that Aena implied that this is all that is holding up the start date and not also the fact that they are still waiting to be privatized.

When I listened to BBC 3 Listeners Radio this morning, I got the impression they will get approval in the coming weeks from the AENA Board for funding the expansion in the coming weeks.
They mentioned how approval from the Government might take a little longer.

If that is true then they are at least moving forward and not waiting for Spanish Government as far as privatisation. Would make sense.

Ive seen a few Thomas Cook flights listed over the last week or so, for example, there was a flight to Ovda last week and tomorrow there's one scheduled to Tel Aviv. Are these one offs or are Thomas Cook planning a small number of regular flights this spring/summer from Luton?

Thomas Cook flights
There are on-off charters for the Jewish community in North London for special religious times of the year. As you will have noticed there are a split charter originating in Manchester. We might see some more later in the year.
Monarch and Thomson have done the occaasional charter also this Easter to tel Aviv and Ovda.

Summer Season Schedule
I know officially the summer timetables begin at the end of March, but the airlines don't usually ramp up their schedules until the start of May. What new routes do we have starting or have started in the last weeks?
I can think of:
AtlasJet - Istanbul (Ataturk)
easyJet - Venice
Monarch - Antalya, Naples and Rome
Thomson - Skiathos
Not sure about Wizzair and Ryanair, I know they both make frequent changes in schedules to their current destinations. Is there much change with any airlines on exisiting routes?
I am wondering if Wizzair flights are beginning to plateau now? As Luton is more or less linked to every single base they operate from, and now will begin using their fleet to link up to other European cities from these bases and will only see tweeks to schedules from LTN.

I notice Cambridge today has now gain Cityjet as a new customer, with routes to Dublin and Amsterdam... I forgot about this airline!
Like most routes from Cambridge they last a few months and get dropped, so maybe CityJet could afterward move their little Fokker to Luton and start routes to Waterford, Isle of Man, Jersey and Gurnsey. An airline like this would be perfect to operate these kind of routes, with the right aircraft type too!
I am pretty sure a single turboprop aircraft based at the airport could muster enough business on already proven routes to keep it busy all day long!

Gilles I agree on the Cityjet point.
Cityjet need to diversify their operations rather than just have their focus in London City as they have in the past. With Flybe about to offer increased competition there, the more they can grow elsewhere the better.
Cambridge does seem a bit if a strange choice, but good luck to them. It would be nice to see them bring a Fokker 50 to Luton. It would be the perfect sized plane for the route you mention all of which I genuinely feel could be successful at Luton in the future. It may be wishful thinking but here's hoping
