The gates along the main apron walkway is where passengers have to turn 180 degrees to face the entrance. The gates and the staircases go back to the days when passengers used the old terminal for boarding so passengers came in from the other direction, which is why the gates now face the wrong direction. There are no plans to improve them.

The airport have put a few new seats in, which look really uncomfortable and many of them have no seat backs. It would appear that their shape wastes a lot of space as there used to be rows of cushioned seats in this area. I think the hard surfaces is to encourage people not to hog them.

LTN Parkway Car Parking

Are there any restrictions at Luton Airport Parkway, for people using the airport to park at the station for a few days?

Seems like the cheapest place to go, if you forget to book airport parking in advance and the £7.60 a day charge seems cheaper than even Airparks who want nearly £11 a day!

Many people have done just that in the past. Try googling Luton Airport Parkway car park review. I can see the roof of the car park as I drive up the A1081 and there is always plenty of cars parked up there 24/7.

I have been spouting on for years that this is where the clever people park. A weekly ticket is £34. Don't forget to buy a return shuttle bus ticket from the conductor of the bus for additional savings and be prepared to be squeezed into a shoebox if you end up on the standard single decker bus as they have 2 of them.

TartinTon...You've hit the nail on the head regarding the current departing passenger experience at LTN. As a local I continue to use the place but as I generally know what gate my flight is departing from well in advance I don't need to spend long in the main overcrowded cattle shed!

I always head for the lounge just before the staircase to gates 1-9 to wait. It was the old mezzanine floor that was put in over the old departure lounge in the old terminal. It is a bit of a trek if the flight is from pier A but it is a nice calm area with next to no one there when I have used it. There is a small cafe there but the seating is part of the airport.

I took this photo on my last visit at 6:50 in the morning during the morning peak last May 7th

Airport Parking

By far the cheapest parking was to be found by parking at Parkway station. I was away for 4 days. Best the airport could do was £43 with a 10-15 min transfer at the longterm. Parkway was £23.60 including the £3.40 return bus fare to the terminal and was 6 mins away. More joined up thinking by the airport......

Thanks for the info...

Do you pay on leaving the car park or have to buy your ticket on arrival?

Pay on leaving the car park. You can't pay at the barrier but have to pay at the machine before getting to the barrier as I learned to my embarrassment!

Seems that the ILS downgrade at both ends has been lifted and is now back to CAT 3B, as the 3A reduction due to issues with the rollout has disappeared from the latest notam.
It has taken over a year since it was first reduced to get it back up. Seeing that the aerials can't be moved and the multi-storey was not put into stealth mode I wonder how it was fixed

As I understand it LTNman, the boffins went off and worked out a scientific fix which negated moving any ground based equipment. Apparently all to do with how the signals are propagated from the ground and no doubt awaited the CAA nod post flight testing?

Thankfully a fix was possible!

LLA Taxiway Alpha

I'm doing an engineering degree and studying the Taxiway Alpha underpass at LLA. Does anyone have any images of it during the build in 1997, any plans/details or suggestions where I could find them?

ILS

Buster the Bear/ LTNman

Any chance sending these boffins up the M1/M6/M42 to BHX?

Three years now without CAT 3 at BHX on runway 33 and CAT 1 has been localizer only for longer than I care to remember.

A bit of low cloud and it is a tailwind landing on 15 but at least that 10000ft runway does have its uses.

Glad Luton has sorted their problem.

A Vueling A319 is on its way in from Florence, three days early! The flights are due to start May 2nd.

Might be worthwhile posting your request on the Luton Nostalgia page as well.

unstirred Follow the Buster link and advice and I will add a couple of photos if you ask there.

The photos above is a reminder of what we can expect, but on a narrower scale, when the mass transit system is dug out under Aplha and then across the CTA to what is now the drop off zone to a semi underground station. Also the tunnel will be dug out under Alpha in two halves, as it was originally, as the taxiway will be moved and then put back, as the tunnel continues into the CTA.

I would have thought that once dug out and with the soil transported to the airports soil dumping ground by the run up bay the airport will finally have enough soil if they ever wanted to put a taxiway in to the very end of the runway. That is assuming that the soil is not needed for the rail link further down but I think more soil is being dug out than will be needed for embankments.

Construction update

First update in three weeks so here goes:

Work has started outside the Holiday Inn on the centre island of the dual carriageway. A well placed new sign is half hidden by a small tree.

Work continues on the road junction to the mid term car park. A new crossing point is being put in so for the first time passengers can walk to the terminal from the Mid Term. Also a new bus stop is going in on the outbound carriageway just out of shot to the left.

People here will have gathered that I am not too impressed by the new "Tesco" style walkway, which is nothing like the signature offerings from the artist impressions. The airport have given the walkway the Luton treatment so it now has a distinct and unique appearance with the adding of guttering pipework that crosses the walkway just above head height in several places. This has saved a few feet of underground drainage being installed.

This whole area would look so much better if it was slabbed in stone rather than tarmac.

The first of the new entrances is being clad in a distinctive yellow with the framework for windows also being installed.

The old ground floor terminal offices are being gutted. Also the old window frames are being removed. Brickwork on the pillars have been removed to allow the terminal extension to be attached.

Work continues around the CTA roundabout which is part opened. With all passenger traffic being directed away from here there is not much traffic now heading for this point. Shuttle buses to the station have been moved while their parking area is concreted.

Work on the Southern Apron extension is progressing towards the taxiway.

Tomorrow will be the start of the summer season so this will be the third summer that work on the road network has taken place. Work first started in the summer of 2015 and was meant to have been finished at the end of last year so this is a big overrun.

Is there a particular reason why they kept the brick extension to the origional terminal building, wouldn't it been a lot easier to demolish it for the new extension to be added.
