Just saw this on the website:

Does this mean Hackney Carrage taxis will be unable to operate from the airport anymore? Either way this will not be popular news with taxi drivers, especially if this company will have a prominent stand in arrivals and a captive audience.
I remember reading somewhere, that because of the airport, Luton has the highest head per population of taxis anywhere in the UK.

Can't see this is implied anywhere.
Taxi holding is common at other airports.
The shear number at times at Luton before was stupid whereas at Parkway there was nothing, just for an Extra on the fare!

Not a great deal happening to the terminal frontage. The canopy has been removed leaving just the framework and the last of the bus shelters have been removed together with the block paving.
The first column of the 11th row of 18 can be seen being installed.
The first signs of the car parks full width takes shape but only the second half will be this wide unlike the plan. With the extra width now starting 7 columns further back than first planned has room been created for a station?
The car park is starting to dominate the landscape
Not much change to the rest of the airport upgrade including the drop off area although even more of the ground floor terminal has been closed off as Bank Holidays always takes its toll on output.

Long tailbacks this morning after a random check. It's going to be a very long hot frustrating summer seeing that it is only May 8th. Hope no one missed their flights.

I wonder how many passengers will be thinking twice about returning.
Whether passengers arrive by car, coach or rail there are in for a torrid time this summer as the airport is already grid locked at busy times and the summer peak is still two months away.
Work first started on the new drop off zone in January which will open in three stages. With stage one not even tarmacked yet and stage one looking smaller than the existing drop off area, which in turn is half the size of the two drop off zones that were open this time last year the chickens are coming home to roost with the delayed start of the airport upgrade.

Being local, I know that the traffic has been much better this year around the airport. Only in the morning as LTNman has pointed out that the traffic is bad. Apart from that to my knowledge the traffic is fine.

Traffic woes
Alas it's not just the morning....On Friday I was to pick up two visitors from arrivals at 8pm; the traffic jam was back to abeam the station. A more ill-tempered, impatient queue I have yet to see; the car park when I finally got there was utter chaos, and just about gridlocked. This evening I delivered the visitors not to the airport for their return flight, but to the station and put them on the purple bus. At least they'll get some benefit from the bus lane. Hopefully this is temporary, and will be sorted one day, but I ain't holding me breath

The problem with the shuttle bus when there is bad traffic jams is that the frequency of the service plummets as all the buses are caught in traffic. This in turn leads to longer passenger queues so not every passenger can get on the first bus that arrives turning the final mile into a nightmare.
When the traffic is really bad the buses often take a different route and use the old way into the airport as the queue length is shorter. To get the the old approach road the buses go through Vauxhalls.
The worst jam I saw last year started at Capability Green when the drop off area was reduced to its present size last August. This year passengers will be up around 25% so the jams will be longer in length and be more frequent throughout the day.
No doubt I am wrong but I take the view that if the contractor employed twice the staff the work would be done in half the time as in recent months there often seems to be a lack of staff working for Whitemountain.
There is of course an instant fix which is to remove the pay barriers at the end of the drop off lanes. With one guy employed to sort out issues when the four barriers don't lift the flow rate through the drop off zone can be painfully slow.

...and still no doctor available at the airport for 38k pax/day. If you are unlucky to have a medical case on board an aircraft you can rely on the medic of the firefighters or an ambulance coming from the city which took 2 hours the other day.

The airport nurse was dispatched years ago but they do employ a Chaplain which is handy if the medical help arrives too late but they do have first aiders.

I don't think the airport uses fire crews for medical emergencies just the terminal first aiders.
