Are they? Qatar flights bookable through to May 2018 now, and only connections are bookable on Cardiff / Doha.

I recall BHX had a number of false starts based on interviews given by Qatar executives, so I suggest we don't get ahead of ourselves. it's operating when reservations open, and not until then.

Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) will place an unspecified number of B737 MAX 8s with a carrier it is investing in airline Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akbar al Baker has told Bloomberg.

The Qataris signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) earlier this month for up to sixty B737 MAX 8s. Although al Baker did not specify the carrier in question, it is believed Italian operator Meridiana fly (IG, Olbia), in which Qatar Airways is acquiring a 49% stake, will be a part beneficiary.

The tentative order broke Qatar Airways' traditional reliance on Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) for its narrowbody needs amid teething problems with the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM-powered A320neo. Given its dissatisfaction, Qatar Airways has cancelled the delivery of at least five A320neo so far with al Baker warning that more would follow unless a permanent fix for the engine's issues is found.

**
In an interview with Arabian Aerospace Online News Service on 28th November 2016, Akbar Al Baker said “We won’t operate the A320 with the 737. The 737 is to cater for investment in other airlines.”

**
In a article in April this year, it suggested that Meridiana by 2021 will in total operate eighteen B737-800s (up from the current six).

**
These 60 aircraft are not yet confirmed orders and still remain 'Letter Of Intent'.
This article is the one i referred to so thanks for that Severn.

CWL will be a B787 route when a sufficient number of A350's have been delivered for other route upgrades.

Of course His Excellency is not known for changing his mind! The normal protocol for the introduction of a thin new route launch has been the use of a 319/320 LR's x 5 times a week until it can absorb the DOC's of a wide body.

I agree with Thrust the important thing is QR are going to operate the route which is much needed for the economy of South Wales just do not expect it to be A 787 from day one.

No, but a dose of realism never goes amiss.

You need to spend less time in front your keyboard fella. Anyone with half a brain knew that when I said they're operating it, knew I meant they're operating it next year. It only seems to be yourself who thought I meant they're operating it now. Not even I can explain that one away.
My real point was all the talk of equipment is just semantics, who cares if they use piper warriors. Just be thankful they're going to operate it. If they decide in the future or before that actually takes place not to operate it then maybe that'll be a discussion point for that time, but right now as far as we're all concerned the route is going ahead.

I'm sorry, but they are not "operating it next year" they have made a statement saying they are going to.

If you look back into not too ancient history Qatar has previous in this regards, notably through BHX where they "announced" the service at least once, but it didn't happen; Gulf Air did similar, again at BHX, amid much fanfair - but it never happened.

An airline / airport / government (delete which not applicable) can make as many PR announcements as they like, but until they announce a schedule, with a start date, and put the route on sale you absolutely cannot say it's happening.

All that said, I hope very much that firstly it does happen, for heaven's sake Wales and other areas of the UK need more international direct connectivity, and second, that is is a successful operation. If it proves to be it will be a boon to the Welsh economy.

All I have said, and I'll repeat myself, is that nobody, not even the airport management, should count their chickens until they are hatched.

Yawn. Pendants bore the ever loving cr@p out of me, I'll say it again for clarity, my point was "who cares what equipment they'll use". I'll leave you to your own self righteous, nth degree responses.

Bit juvenile for someone of your age and experience, but there we go.

I hope that no one is disappointed if Qatar don't start in 2018 - hopefully, as I said, they will. Using what, as you quite rightly say, is secondary to it happening.

No, I'm not juvenile, I'm just tired of explaining myself to someone who chooses to micro analyse a sentence of mine that contained about 5 words which was not even relevant to the point I was trying to make.
Fingers crossed it'll go ahead whether it be a 787/777/380/320, who really cares what it is so long as it's flown.

I see Qatar's LAS launch has been pushed back by at least five months. Is the CWL route on sale yet?

A quick look at Qatars website and trying a dummy booking would give you your answer, and that answer is..... no

Or I could just ask the question here and wait for someone kind enough to provide an answer. Which is exactly what I done. Many thanks,

Quite a collection of airlines and aircraft types coming into CWL over the next few days.......

Air France, Alitalia, AlbaStar Airlines, Meridiana, Air Nostrum, CSA Czech Airlines, Astra Airlines, Blue Air, Iberia, Mistral Air, Carpatair, Ernest Airlines, Eastern Airways, Air Horizont, Titan Airways and Blue Panorama to name a few.

Plus extra scheduled flights with Iberia Express, Vueling and Ryanair with KLM also upgrading to 737's.

Good selection of beasts in as well, the largest is meant to be Iberia A340-600's and Alitalia A330's (it may even be a 777)
