I suspect it actually stems from the desire for an Italian partner. Air One takes over Alitalia, LH is already heavily connected with Air One, ergo it becomes a LH takeover in substance.

Untrue - fanciful rumours eminate from Rome on a daily basis in their desparation to find a solution to Alitalia's funding crisis. The financial press now ignore most of them.

Honestly - If had a £ for every time I heard "Lufthansa are taking over Airline x" I would be a very rich boy. Where do they all stem from?

AZ,IB,BD how many others have they elged to have taken over or going to.

All these rumours lead to nothing i would imagine. I know LH are powerfull but i dont think there power is that big, to let them take over nearlly all of the airlines that have been mentioned for takeover by rumours.

The Solution

Preferably close Alitalia down. The Italian government has for years been pumping state aid (probably illegally under EU law) into Alitalia. This just skews the market, and gives the employees a sense of invincibility - hence the never ending rounds of strikes by all quarters of the airline.

A new smaller, leaner carrier would surely rise phoenix like from the ashes, standing on it's own two feet, like most of the other major European carriers (BA, LH, IB for example). The problem is Italy won't face up to economic realities.

Yeah and since DLH has more than one strike going on this year (first ground/mx staff, now pilots, F/A`s will most likely be next this winter) they share a common company culture....

I'm dreaming: LH/LX/OS/AZ would be great against AF/KL and BA/IB.
