The BE route from LGW had nowhere near the connection possibilities (there were no BA codeshares on BE routes out of LGW at that time) as LHR-LBA will, and still achieved reasonable loads - beancounters at Exeter stopped it and the DUS route because of punitive charges against smaller aircraft (DH4s, AT7s) at LGW. Apologies for that little digression...

That's surprising, how long were they on the route?
I have from summer 2009 season to winter 2010 season, google may yield exact dates.

Makes you wonder how a LBA-LGW would do now, either on BE metal with the BA flight code or a twice daily on a BA aircraft to offer onward connections through the LGW longhaul network.

BA will have lounge in place at LBA, as well as ground handling, fuel etc, so why not make use of the station to offer flights into both of the BA mainline London airports ?

Same applies to ABZ, NCL etc etc etc

BE haven't really been expanding in LGW and one major reason is the flat-rate pricing policy of the airport operator which disadvantages smaller aircraft in favour of larger ones. For example, the 2011-12 fees and charges (sorry, link to 2012-13 seems to be broken) shows that a peak-time landing will cost about £1350 (independent of aircraft size) which is a bit steep if you're trying to fly a route which only needs a 78-seater or a 118-seater.

IMHO, BA no longer really has the breadth of network in LGW (even long haul) to justify extensive domestic feed (I think they tried hubbing there before )

Why was BA8081 from BHD to LHR so severely delayed this evening?
Outbound flight left Heathrow 2 hours late. No idea why.
Crewing issues. BHD crew found out yesterday they were going to be made redundant & therefore did not fly.

BA used to run several UK domestic routes to/from LGW. They've been steadily reduced over the last few years. Where there are two "London" destinations, it tends to be LHR and LCY rather than LHR and LGW now.

As a matter of interest, would BE pay similar at LHR, or is it a lot higher?

If it's similar, maybe it's the eye-watering costs of slots that would keep them (and similar shorthaul carriers) out of LHR?

It seems a strange policy for LGW management to try and squeeze out an important tenant. Perhaps LGW management think that BE has nowhere else to go. To an extent, they're right.

The charges you see there are the standard published fees etc, which you need to make available fora public airport. They are like a "maximum price". For commercial users they are a starting point for a business negotiation.

New aircraft "list" prices work the same way.

You can't trust BA's statements on which flights make/lose money

For several generations they claim to lose money on LHR-ABZ - this is where half the passengers are flying on company tickets and the return fare is circa £480

KLM/KLC your surely referring to.

Even they look at the balance of connecting over P2P and there is evidence that when the balance is wrong overly reliant on connecting with little P2P individual routes can and do become unviable

NOTE suspension of LPL and transfer of Southampton to third party risk directly on these grounds.

NWi/MME/HUY/ABZ all survive because of lucative OIL contracts rather than local catchment area feed alone.

Other major points MAN/BHX/BRS continue to have significant P2P in ADDITION to transfers.

A I said the domestic legs are far from a bl**dy taxi service and the new LBA will have targets and performance measurements set.

These will detail such things as balance of FULL Fare and third party interline traffic with in house connections.

If the route has too high a portion of connections (taxi service) and these slots can be more effectively used elsewhere those 525 seats each way may be sacrificed.

I want to believe the LHR-LBA_LHR services will be a success however my cynisism remains .

BA winter 12/13

Thanks a lot for this comprehensive listing, BAladdy! Are the former BD destinations ADD, ATQ, EVN and KRT now gone? Good to see that many of BD's ex-BMED routes have remained.

Would imagine that it's exactly the same as BD.

I believe there was some restriction on operating to Tehran - something along the lines of 'the flag carrier' of the UK in this instance cannot operate. Hence why bmi operated it rather than BA. Might have got this story wrong though, I just remember reading it somewhere.

There was some concern that Tehran might have to be canned if BA couldn't get the traffic rights. Fortunately, common sense seems to have prevailed and BA have been allowed to operate there.

Guessing the technical issues remain at LGW. Today's BA2624/5 LGW-NCE-LGW was operated by bmi A320 G-MEDK. Nice for them passengers in the first 6 rows!
