I wondered what an ASU was - Now I know its a Bouncy Castle Inflation Service- Given the apparent state of the Airfield's perimeter fencing - Would you leave an old compressor lying about there.
You could not make it up - If the incdent was not so serious, I would have had a fit of the gilggles. Locals 1 - ASU 0 - Enough
"Was told by driver last week that emirates BHX lounge opens september 1st along with a third daily early morning flight.I believed him up until the point he told me that to celebrate the opening, emirates will fly in the A380.I'm no expert, but i'm pretty sure BHX runway is way too short."
Its been discussed previously on here that as part of the opening of the new pier Ek has been asked to bring in an A380, this has been discussed by the airport and yes BHX can handle the A/C just need a tow bar for the beast. Am sure this will be organised if one comes in. Saying that it cannot operate scheduled service due to max take off weight restrictions due runway length, had heard will only be sold up to 777 config, so if it does come in it will be a one off.
Other airlines are also planning things such as the Lufthansa Junkers and numerous airlines have been asked to send in their retro schemed a/c. Dates have varied so will leave that for now as the pier is running behind a little I beleive.
Best regards

Noticed on another site, photos of a French Air Force A310 landing from the USA to drop off passengers. There have been a number of these visits from A310s and A340s in the past by the French Air Force from the USA, anybody know what the purpose is and who they are dopping off?
The A380 has a better take off performance than a 747, and those used to operate direct from BHX to Toronto with Wardair..Therefore it could operate to DXB as it would be nowhere near max take off weight in either fuel or passengers.
Whether it would be viable with BHX normal load of 773er passengers on a 380 is another matter.
It it is used in place of the regular 77W it will be for a publicity stunt, and as such it's commercial viability for a one-off trip is hardly relevant.
I believe, as Skipness said, that performance would not be an issue - and I reckon the chances of it happening to celebrate the anniversary of the airport, and the opening of the new pier are pretty good - though I am privvy to no such information myself.
EK have been talking about expansion for some time. In June 2005 a 'spokesman' talked about a potential third daily and this (below) appeared in the Birmingham Post in April 2006.
I am told it will be operating, one of my colleagues has booked to fly on it. Aircraft is only showing 773 on the airline web site so they checked with the airline, the reason being that if the A380 is tech (does happen regularly on the EK002 to LHR, which is where the aircraft will be nicked from, according to some crew I have spoken to) it will be replaced by a 773 so no unhappy punters left behind. Can the A380 lift a full load to DXB, I am told it can. Will it be a regular at BHX, doubt it as it will seriously reduce the available cargo volume.
French AF a/c came in from Montreal Canada earier. At the wrong time and the stand was announced last min. I hear the crew (purser) was not particularly chipper about stand 81! DOH
The restriction on the A380 is one of landing not take off...... It needs less to take off but more to land apparently......Yes, I found it strange as well...!!
Brumboy..."'SINGLE perimeter fence was cut with a pair of pliers' - how do you know?"
As max boyce might have said..."I was there".
CAl 100..........I have worked there for 13 years...trust me its crap.
Hnh
Not been there that long then???? Let us know when you get some real time in. you've got a lot of catching up to do.....
Worked here for 13 years and now you are never going to fly from here again???
You actually think that a double fence would have made a difference?
People escaped from Nazi POW camps with all the security they had. A whole bunch of protesters burst through a fence they had cut in an airport security fence.
Nothing is perfect....and never will be...
After all those years () at the airport you would have thought you could have gotten your head around the security patrols you don't think happen....

It seems you still don't know what an ASU is......

Lets hope that during the hours of darkness or when air ambos dont fly, you never need to be airlifted to hospital, as the Police Helicopter does that and "your" locals have now removed the facility and hence put peoples lives at risk....
The embarrasment is mainly on the doorstep of the airport who obviously cannot protect its own airfield, the "locals" that did this were able to enter the airfield and what was to stop them crossing the main and attacking a fuelled airliner???
Ask the airport that one...
West Midlands Police already have a replacement helicopter doing the job, It was spotted hovering around the Fort Retail Park, Erdington yesterday evening.
