Bournemouth Airport has reported that 2006 was its busiest year on record with 955,160 passengers passing through its doors, showing a 15.6% jump compared to 2005 (826,424).
During the month of December 2006 there was a year-on-year increase of 33% in scheduled flights – mainly due to the introduction of Ryanair’s three additional routes this winter to Madrid, Pisa and Shannon. These fantastic results were achieved despite increased security measures introduced in August and a spell of bad weather (fog) before Christmas which affected many airports across the country. Bournemouth Airport suffered minimal delays and just a couple of cancellations over the four day period.
The airport’s top three destinations during December were Dublin (8066 passengers), closely followed by Girona (7909) and Glasgow-Prestwick (7812). The Spanish resorts of Malaga and Alicante featured in 4th and 5th place with 5980 and 5326 passengers respectively.
The Airport is now looking forward to another busy year in 2007. Three new operators will be added to the airport’s summer flight schedule:
Wizz Air flying to Katowice in Poland three times a week
Olympic Holidays offering a weekly flight to Crete
Goldtrail Holidays offering a weekly flight to Dalaman in Turkey
In addition, Thomsonfly will be re-introducing its popular service to Valencia (3 per week) and will continue its Prague route throughout the summer (4 per week). Work is also expected to start on the Airport’s ambitious £32million redevelopment programme, subject to obtaining the necessary planning approvals.
Peter Duffy, Managing Director of Bournemouth Airport said: “We are delighted with the passenger figures for 2006 and believe they reflect the level of commitment that the Airport has to providing excellent choice and value for the region’s leisure and business travellers. Despite this growth in passenger numbers we are, however, determined to maintain our reputation of being a friendly and easy-to-use airport and I would like to pay tribute to all our staff and colleagues who have worked tirelessly throughout 2006 to deliver the very highest standards of customer service and satisfaction.”
Seems to me that Peter Duffy at BOH and Penny Coates at EMA can't think for themselves!
This is from the EMA website:
Penny Coates, Managing Director EMA said “We are very pleased with the passenger figures for 2006 and believe they reflect the level of commitment that the Airport has to providing excellent choice and value for the region’s business and leisure travellers. We remain dedicated to increasing this choice further in 2007. Despite the growth in passenger numbers, East Midlands Airport is determined to maintain its reputation of being a friendly and easy-to-use airport. Work is now underway to improve upon and ensure our customers’ needs are catered for in the terminal and we expect all changes to be made in time for the start of the summer season. I would like to pay tribute to and thank all our colleagues who have worked tirelessly throughout 2006 to deliver the very highest standards of customer service and satisfaction.”
So does that mean EMA "remain dedicated to increasing this choice further in 2007" but BOH doesn't?
I notice the 'New for 2006' page has at last gone from the website but hasn't been replaced by a 2007 version and no announcement yet of the Goldtrail flights to Dalaman although the Holiday Destinations page has been updated to include it.
CO would be to Newark, but I can't see them going into Bournemouth. The likes of Newcastle, Aberdeen, East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Doncaster and Cardiff are likely to be way up the list before BOH!
Whilst my pulse quickened at the thought of a scheduled transatlantic service from BOH I believe the poster may be referring to a Continental Cargo service starting up.
BOH is listed in the cities served for Cargo operations
one day maybe, I think we'll need the new terminal up and running before a scheduled widebody service ever starts from BOH though
Bournemouth has officially submitted plans to the council for its proposed redevelopment. ALPHA retail also signed a £20m 7 year deal to supply the duty free shopping at the airport. http://www.thisisbournemouth.co.uk/m...e_unveiled.php
Lots of rumours in this thread and others re BOH route expansions over the past six months so I thought I'd list them all in one place.
EasyJet base of two or three planes
RyanAir base of two or three planes plus or including INV, LPL and REU routes
Additional Air Berlin routes to Germany
Additional WizzAir routes to Poland
Air Southwest routes to NCL, LBA, MAN and CDG
I hereby open the floor for comments\latest informed news\wild rumours concerning any of the above or feel free to add others I've missed...
easyJet - was supposed to launch Milan Bergamo in Feb but were scared off by Ryanair rumours that they were to set up a base at BOH
Ryanair - Have already announced in the press that BOH will be a base from 2010/11 with 2 to 3 aircraft. And additional routes on a yearly basis up to that point. Routes up to 2010 likely to be to existing bases.
Wizzair - if they can make KTW work, they can make WAW work. Only a matter of time before they do WAW from BOH. Forward bookings encouraging.
Air Berlin - Think they are adding a fourth frequency to PAD for the summer. Again, like Wizzair, there are more lucrative German routes they should be doing from BOH and they are TOTALLY aware of that.
Air Southwest - Not sure whats happening here.
Continental - Frequency may be taken from BRS to launch a BOH service on 3 or 4 times weekly. This isn't likely to happen near-term though.
Nakata, with respect you won't see any new routes from AB in the near future, if at all - the PAD route is as a result of a strong military presence; not because they decided an oddball route to a small and relatively unknown city would be a better idea than going to Berlin or Hamburg.
STN, BOU and MAN are the only non-sun routes served from PAD.
AB currently offer PMI via PAD - but only one way! (which seems strange if you ask me!)
It would be an interesting one for them - Tfly doesn't operate PMI through the winter, and Palmair's frequency is pittiful. There IS demand in the winter, and at better frequency.
