OR Tambo International Airport's airline diversity

Hi. This is my first thread here. If I am doing anything wrong please notify me.

I just thought I'd put it out there that, with TAM (JJ) now operating, I believe JNB/FAOR might be the only airport in the world with direct, NON-STOP service from at least one airline from every inhabited continent!

We have QF from Australia, CX and CA from Asia, LH, AF, BA (among others) from Europe, DL from North America, numerous airlines from Africa and now JJ from South America!

Varig used to fly to Rio, before they collapsed.

It was the best way to get to the USA west coast.

Friday daylight flight to Rio, weekend on Copacabana Beach then an overnight to LA

Sorry, but it's not the only one.

Try Dubai or Doha, for example.

Hi Caiman27,

Yes those airports have non-stop service to all continents but that is operated by their own airlines. For example, EK flies to all continents from DXB.

What I am saying is that at least one native airline from every continent operates a non-stop service into JNB.

DXB is not served by a South American carrier.
DOH is not served by a North/South American or an Australian carrier.

Even LHR does not have non-stop service from QF but rather a direct one via DXB.

Put another way, from every continent there is at least one carrier that starts their service there and ends it in JNB without any intermediate stop along the way.

Good golly and gosh!
I can remember when Bop Air used to run a schedule to the Republic of Bophutatswana, a land that was, as it were, in an altogether different continent subsisting within a sub continent and yet within in its own right. It was a marvellous and magical land, full of palm trees, sultry ladies and the remnants of Bloemfontein society masquerading as storm troopers in khaki shorts and old Mercedes Benzes.

Don't forget Transkei Airways as well. Did Ciskei and Venda ever have their own airlines ?
