Van down in Tanz

Just got word that a Caravan is down at Lake Manyara. Looks like all are out alive. But some people may have been hurt. The story is engine failure on takeoff. For the moment just a reporting point. I know many guys from the company. I dont think it is fair to make conclusions and say things that are just rumour at this stage. I guess we can say the pilot did a good job to save his pax. Pole sana.

Yep the van belongs to Regional Air Services. I know there has been a few cases of late with vans and EFATO. Have to wait and see what happens. Still no other details, sorry.

To give an idea of what the pilot faced. The elevation of HTLM is 4150 ft, the end of the runway is right on the edge of the escarpment. It drops straight down to 3150 ft (lake elevation) so he would not have had much time.

I have not seen the crash site yet. But I am sure I will be in LM in the next few days. Shall report what I see.

Hey wiz. Just been cruzn in Tanz. Badai (later)

406pilot, Helldog, vipa wandugus ya TZ?? Helldog are you still cruzin' around HTMA? For da Belgian?

406matatudriver, what do you mean you're not on the machine. Umeacha Tanzanair? Sema bwana.

Guys, bad news about MUA, hope the injuries aren't too bad? Who was it? I guess we don't like having names out here, but just first name will be enough for me. The guys are RAS were all pretty cool.

Ndio, the Vans are getting in the red. There was another EFATO in IMC a few months ago in Lake Erie, and the list is growing. Congrats to the pilot, I guess he was heavy, doing the schedule. Luckily there's space on the lake.

Salaams,
Shenzi

Mo. Hey dude. Yep I will send you a PM tiger.

I saw the crash sight near the road as it was about to be loaded onto a atruck, it is back in Arusha now.

No reasonable explanation can be found here as to the cause of the failure. So the donk is on its way to Canada for inspection.

Not much is being said at the moment. Like I said all we can say is, fair play to the pilot. I understand it was a difficult job. Oil on the windscreen and traffic on the road made things all that much harder.

Hey shenzi, not in MZA now I am in your old job. Take it easy.

Mo, salaams, how'zit going in the West?

Hey Helldog, you got the job with XL? That's cool Dude, lots of good flying hours and you meet interesting clients. Plus, the twins are sexy.

I read the official report, great job by the driver of the Van, a shame there was traffic on the road. your mailbox is full.

406pilot, mambo vipi? Umekwama wapi?

Cessna crash-lands on road, eight injured
by Arusha Times Reporter

For the residents of Kigongoni location of Mto-wa-Mbu area in Monduli district, it was a dramatic sight to see a small aeroplane landing on the road.

But for the pilot and seven passengers aboard the Cessna Grand Caravan plane the occurrence was a Wednesday morning nightmare.

The area of accident is a few kilometres from Mto wa Mbu along the newly constructed tarmac road which runs from the Makuyuni junction to Ngorongoro National Park gate.

The aeroplane had just taken off from the Lake Manyara airstrip, heading to the Serengeti plains, when mechanical problems forced its pilot, Captain Freddy Lauwo to perform an emergency landing.

The pilot, reportedly, jettisoned the fuel and decided to land on the tarmac road stretching below. Lauwo was also hurt in the crash.

All could have probably gone well, were it not for an approaching car which forced the plane pilot to swerve on the side to avoid hitting it, thus causing the high speeding aircraft to crash.

A local tour driver reported the incident to Arusha as soon as he saw the plane crash, by calling on a radio call to his company.

"Save the children" ambulance was the first vehicle to be dispatched to the scene long before the report reached the Regional Police desk.

Regional Crime Officer (RCO), Godfrey Nzowa rushed to the scene with a team of Police officers as soon as he heard of the crash.

The Regional Police Commander (RPC), James Kombe, issued a report later on, indicating that six people were injured in the accident, four of whom, seriously.

He named the seriously hurt passengers as Calvin O’Conell (45), Brian Hollind (59) both British citizens; Kortge Ursulla (65) and Wolfgang Kortge (70) from Germany. The four were rushed to Nairobi for further treatment.

Others who were taken to Arusha for treatment are, Kathleen Hollanda (56), Mike Sanders (33) and Tina Noela all being British citizens.

RPC Kombe, praised the residents of Kigongoni for their selfless support and the fact that they made sure all the passengers belongings remained safe.

Gusto l'ami, cool to hear that you're on a 406. Fast Baby! Great news.
Life in the US is way too comfortable and still pretty much enjoyable. Not enough flying for me, to my taste, but time will help. I am living in Chicago, but go back and forth to Fl to pass my ratings. Going back for the CFII in 10 days. Do you remember the guy that was in the C206 with me when we met that giraffe, he's invited me to Houston too and I am going to do a small B737 course, just an intro to CRM and jet flying, it's at Continental airline, not too expensive and quite enriching. I don't have dates yet, but if you're there in June, i'll see my plans.

Rock on, and happy weekend to all the shenzi rubanis in EA.
Gusto, bon vols.

And another one......

I spent many happy hours on vans, but just heard from a buddy that another van suffered EFATO and landed in the ocean. Pilot escaped and fortunately no pax on board. This occurred in Belize to a local operator and is their second water landing - the first went down in heavy rain and was not due to mechanical failure.

The van has a good track record and we all know how reliable the trusty PT-6 is! Must just be some bad mojo out there...

The Quest for Lone Rider,

Okay, I love this game. Did you move back to Wilson after some time at RAS? mmmh, give me another clue Dude.

Yes, have we come to the end of the great Van's reputation? Have they now gotten too old? Or is it that they're mainly operated in rough neighborhood and maintenance not as top as it should be? Maybe it's a wrong question.

Rock on
