I am from the dark ages, but "manual" observers would never have been allowed to report "sky obscured" with a vis of 8km and cloud base of 700ft.

Automatic weather stations are wonderful, but someone has had to ponder a hell of a lot about slashes and backslashes to accomodate every combination of possibilities nature can come up with.

Such is progress with automation - the tradeoff is you get irritating bureaucracy and complex forgettable fluff.
