I'd be careful using equipment that is not specifically approved for airborne use. You may invalidate your AOC and the insurance.
iPad may be approved, but I can't guarantee it. I do know the iPad is being used as a flight bag - EFB - by many carriers already.
The approvals for aerial use take months (years?) And cost lots of biccies ($) so the price rises proportionately.
There may be other issues with unapproved navigation equipment. You had best check with your local civil aviation authority.
