Why build "new" airframes.....why not just modify existing models of aircraft for the maritime role.....say the C-130
Given AML's (DD/Avionics(RAF)) insistence in 1997 that C130 was fitted with Active Dipping Sonar, and his committal of rather large sums to procuring ADS LRUs and spares for C130, at least this idea has a head start. Only need to ensure the aircraft is stable in the hover......
