I dispute airship's second postulation. Although computers may have been much smaller, they would have needed much larger input devices.
I had a run in with an elephant once, at Billy Smart's Circus. They have a wicked sense of humour and I reckon that any animal with a sense of humour that matches our own must be at least as intelligent as we are. Possibly smarter. [Thinks: On the other hand we don't have many humans peforming in Nelly Efelump's Circus]
On a later visit to Gerry Cottell's Curcus we inspected the animals. No.1 Daughter (aged 6¼) declared "Phew! They smell like boys!"
