I had a run in with an elephant once, at Billy Smart's Circus. They have a wicked sense of humour and I reckon that any animal with a sense of humour that matches our own must be at least as intelligent as we are. Possibly smarter. On a later visit to Gerry Cottell's Curcus we inspected the animals. No.1 Daughter (aged 6¼) declared "Phew! They smell like boys!"
