At least in the US system....rather than memorize numbers we are allowed to look at the gauges or indicators and decipher what we see displayed.
One example of what can result from the US system is a crew of two pilots who came along to pick up a S-76. After strapping in and fiddling about for twenty minutes they came back in to ask advice on how to start it.
