Edinburgh is just not built for long haul. Although dating from only 1977, they never dreamed that the building would have to deal with this amount of traffic. The expansion has been a typical BAA compromise. A small and friendly airportbuilt with public money, with views outside from landside, facilities for meeters and greeters, space was sold to a private company and flogged off by the government. Now I'm not a socialist but what did the BAA do?
They built loads of shops, removed any landside facilities, discouraged any meeters and greeters and built new facilities bolted onto the exisiting structure where possible. The result is a faceless human processing factory with lots of shops designed to part you from your money. it is NOT a pleasure to use and any future expansion is going to involve more bits added on willy nilly. The expansion of Ryanair will only strive to reign in airport improvements as they won't intend to pay for it!
I honestly think that airport and railway infrastructure, certainly in our main cities ought to have some degree of public ownership / investment. Looking at Glasgow and Edinburgh now, they've taken some decent little airports, made a lot of money and still left us with terminals that in Glasgow's case, isn't much younger than LHR T2 which is rightly being flattened. Eastern pier anyone? It's a joke!
You can't get a pint into a half pint pot. I never thought I'd say this, but I am now convinced that a proper new Central Scotland facility is the best thing which of course we can't afford now ! Arrgh!
