But, assuming the engines are the standard RR Trent 900's. Isn't Rolls Royce (or whoever the manufacturer is) to blame? Therefore the ironics of the 747 joke isn't very ironic

It could be any number of factors that require an engine change, Having actually changed several Trent 900's I can safely say none have been down to manufacturers issues.
Please keep uninformed speculation to a minimum
GP7200's are another matter.....
