If you're pilot-in-command and you think you need to call a Mayday, then don't p155 about debating whether anyone else is going to be offended. If you're even thinking about it then you've probably got good reason to do it - and the sensibilities of any numpty Air Traffic Controllers or FISOs can go rot - at least until you're safely back on the ground when you can argue about it.
These procedures exist for the safety of flight, not the convenience of Air Traffic Controllers.
