I'm obviously still missing some key piece of information, because I don't quite see why the SO/CoS99 issue only affects 744 ops?
Surely, keeping 744 DEFOs on freighters to allow for SO upgrades is offset by the fact that we hire pax DEFOs on Airbus and 777?
If I recall correctly, there was a NTC or a DFO/AOA correspondance which stated in general terms "no HK-based DEFOs will be hired onto the pax fleet untill the last CoS99 SO has had the opportunity to upgrade"
Fair enough; but how does that exclude a SFO based 744 DEFO from flying a passenger aircraft until 2011?
