As he began his sentence it emerged that two months before the incident he had been arrested after a police pursuit involving the same helicopter.
However, his barrister, Caroline Patrick, said he denied targeting the aircraft as an act of revenge.
She described Bottomley as an immature young man with "significant deficits in his thinking".
