was on duty for some of last week,I saw that some requests were turned down by the handlers(servisair and signature) for good reasons. Signature handled several extra exec jet type aircraft and turned down a few that wanted to divert whilst signature were closed (they are under no obligation to be there during all airport hours). Servisair turned down some requests, i cannot definitely say why but understand that the main reason is that they have to consider the capacity of the terminal and arrivals area to cope with extra pax over and above the eghh scheduled pax. Also, parking for aircraft diverting then night stopping is extremely limited, again eghh schedules/charters/mail flights etc take priority.
there were more diversions accepted in the past but they didn't have to compete with many scheduled movements.the day that 42 aircraft diverted was utter chaos, several pax waited 3 hours or more to get off their aircraft, i think it was 1996.
Another important point, if you've been told several times through the daythat no handling is available don't then set off and complain when you are again told you cannot land.
