The engine
Certified craft use reliable engines, such as the 4-stroke Lycoming. These engines are then derated for helicopter use.
Most homebuilt helicopters use less reliable engines, many of which are 2-stroke. Then some have added enhancements, such as tuned exhausts, to extract more power out of the engine.
