BEagles's mention of Wilson sparks a grey cell of times in the mid 60's when Wilson usually spent Easter at his holiday home on the Scillies. The majority of Culsdrose was also on leave at that time but in case there was a need to get the PM back to the mainland in a hurry a Wessex crew was kept on standby, much to their annoyance during a leave period.

There was a wonderful press photo taken at the time of Wilson in a two piece bonedome (Mk1?) sitting in the pilot's seat. However, to get their own back, for the photo the crew deliberately put the silver outer part of the helmet back to front on his head. Only those in the know appreciated the joke - made him look a bit of an a**e!

EDIT - Jindabyne - Sea Vixens were there - excerpt follows from the Fleet Air Arm Officers' Association web site (of course we left out the RAF contribution!)

1967

FAA aircraft, Sea Vixens and Buccaneers bomb the wreck of the tanker, the Torrey Canyon, ashore on the Longstones.
