Airservices CEO, Jason Harfield, stepping down
As I said in my first post on this thread - the announcement gave me no joy or hope.
On 5 May, Kharon in their The Sunday Brunch Gazette (AuntyPru) posted the following

In the governance of 'matters aeronautical' case, the avoidance of 'responsibility' has become an expensive, exquisite, rarefied art form. Anyone who believes for a minute that sacking Halfwit Harfield and even his Board will correct the consequences of avoiding responsibility is dreaming. The corrections required demand Ministerial not departmental intervention. The sums of money needed to effect the changes is outlandish - but money and spin alone will not correct the flaws nor shoo away the negligence inflicted. IMO the Minister should bring charges against Halfwit Harfield and his Board for gross negligence, dereliction and gross incompetence; accept the responsibility a crown minister has to the public and return Australian airspace to world best standard.

There is no Minister “of ASA, ASTB and CASA”. There’s a Minister responsible for the administration of the legislation that establishes ASA, ATSB and CASA, but that’s legislation made by the Parliament. Please read that twice.

Did you ever consider this apparent opaqueness is intentional? If not in it's initial creation, then in its ongoing tenure?

The problem was always going to be who replaces them, and who in their right mind would want to with the current structure? It is the perfect opportunity for the government to take it back under its control and ditch the faux business model.

Agreed.
I'm not sure how this failed system is recovered as the PNR was passed years ago, but something radical is now necessary.

I've just received the speaker list for the Aeronautical Society Celebrating Aerospace Downunder - 2024 event to be held in Canberra in October. Mr Harfield is on the list.
Any one care to guess the subject of his presentation? Perhaps a follow up to Mr Smith's seminal work on the Aviation Hall of Doom.

According to Departmental witnesses before Estimates, Harflield's period as CEO ends on 8 June 2024. Minister King extended it for 3 months, from 8 March 2024.

Witnesses today also said that Harfield's on leave - notwithstanding that a witness said Harfield's appointment was extended for 3 months so that he could deal with some vitally important management issue - so my money's on him not fronting Estimates at 0900 Canberra time tomorrow.

It's cringey watching those Senators, who have no technical idea, asking stupid questions and thinking they have won points. One good thing to see is that PC seems to know his stuff and speaks well. Whether he wants to continue in Jason's role is one question and whether he has what it takes to make any significant change is the other. He may be too "tainted".
Failed SDE experiment may not be a great thing on a c.v ? though not sure corporate memory extends that far back ?

Yes peuce - it's frustrating watching the Senators shadow boxing. The most frustrating thing, though, is that nothing substantial would change even if they landed any decent punches. The chronic problems are the consequences of the baked-in DNA of Airservices and airspace management. It's structural. Trying to embarrass a few officials during occasional Estimates hearings won't change thing one.
